From 482 to PR: the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream
The most common path from a 482 to permanent residency is the 186 (TRT stream). Key points: • 2 years working for your sponsor on the 482 (reduced from 3). Time with a previous employer counts only if they were an approved sponsor at the time. • Generally under 45 when you apply, unless an exemption applies • Competent English, usually higher than the 482 level, so book your test early • Your employer must still be operating, still need the role, and pay at least the income threshold What goes wrong most often: unpaid leave or gaps that push you below 2 years, a job title or duties that drift away from the nominated occupation, and payslips that don't match the contract. Ask your employer about the 186 nomination well before your 2 years are up.
